Like most expanding cities, New York has absorbed a number of smaller towns, which can now be spoken of as suburbs. Thus, independent administrative settlements actually merged with the New York City: Yonkers, 200 thousand in the north, Paterson, 150 thousand in the north-west, Newark, 280 thousand and Jersey City, 250 thousand in the west, Elizabeth, 130 thousand in the southwest. Therefore, speaking of such a colossal megalopolis administrative division is often omitted and New York means a huge agglomeration, not only the New York City.
Administratively the city is divided into 5 areas: Manhattan, centre, Staten Island, south-west, Queens, east, the Bronx, north and Brooklyn, south. If areas became independent cities, the Manhattan, Brooklyn, the Bronx and the Queens would make the ten most populous cities in the United States.
Manhattan with more than 1.6 million inhabitants is the most populous and famous district of New York, located on the same island. The island is 21 km with the total area of 60 sq.km. Manhattan is the heart and the nerve of the metropolis, the financial centre of the United States. It is the most attractive area for tourists. The massive skyscrapers of the Broadway, a variety of areas, central park, and numerous cultural and historical attractions, Statue of Liberty – all this makes Manhattan one of the main symbols of America.
Brooklyn with more than 2.5 million people is the largest by the number of residents District of New York. It is connected with Manhattan by the famous Brooklyn Bridge. The area is characterized by social and ethnic diversity. As well as in Manhattan in Brooklyn there are many dissimilar areas filled with its own attractions and unique atmosphere. For instance the south Brooklyn is the Russian district called Brighton Beach.
Queens with 2.3 million inhabitants is the largest district with the highest ethnic diversity. Queens residents speak 130 languages. It is mainly a residential area with an interesting culture and traditions. In Queens there are two of the three major airports in New York. Flushing Meadows-Corona Park annually hosts US Open tennis tournament.
Bronx of about 1.4 million people is the area to the north of Manhattan, the birthplace of rap music and hip-hop. Bronx is a melting pot of cultures and a variety of scenic landscapes with attractions such as Bronx Zoo, Botanical Gardens, Water front City Island.
Staten Island of about 500 thousand inhabitants is the least populated and most “provincial” from the boroughs of New York. It is considered a residential area. Named in honour of the island the town is most attractive for tourists for “Staten Island Ferry” connecting the island with Manhattan.
New York is an example of power, gigantism and scope, interweaving cultures and styles and a variety of languages. It’s the world’s best example of art, architecture, music, and fashion. No wonder that every year New York is visited by over 47 million foreign tourists only. For New York City is characterized by two key features of the city: the diversity and density. New York is incredibly diverse city. As one of the centres of attraction of immigrants, it became home to millions of immigrants from all over the world. According to statistics, 36% of the residents were not born in the United States. In this respect New York is only ahead of Los Angeles and Miami. It is in New York where the largest African-American community is residing in the United States. A large Jewish community settled in New York, almost 700,000 ethnic Chinese, many immigrants from Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic. Historically large Italian and Irish communities were formed. In recent decades, a large number of immigrants from the former Soviet Union have settled in New York (around 400 to 600 thousand people). In general, the city statistics is as follows: White (not Hispanic Latin origin) – 37% of African Americans – 28% of Hispanics – 27%, Asians – 10%.
It is worth noting that for such a large and multi-racial city the crime rate is kept at an acceptable level. So in statistical charts New York is at the end of the second hundred by the level of crime among the cities with a population of over 100 thousand people.
